DISTANCE TRAVELED

The path to orthopedics starts here!

Distance Traveled aims to tackle barriers to entry for under-represented minorities by exposing high school students to orthopedics through one-day outreach initiatives consisting of lectures and hands-on mock surgeries.

What Will Students Learn?

Distance Traveled is working with high schools in NYC.

Students learn about the different sub-specialties of orthopedics:
Pediatrics, hand, foot and ankle, sports, shoulder and elbow, adult reconstruction, trauma, oncology/tumor, and spine.

After a brief lecture, students will have a hands-on experience with our orthopedic team!

Distance Traveled workshops are geared toward under-represented minorities (URM).

We know that early exposure to orthopedics for URM students is a crucial driver for students to explore a career in orthopedics.

Our goal is to drive diversity, equity, and inclusion in orthopedic surgery.

We are grateful for the support of our partners.

It all begins with attending a Distance Traveled Workshop

Lectures and Mock-Surgeries
Distance Traveled's intent is that the workshop will spark students' interest in orthopedics and open their eyes to new opportunities.
Post-Workshop Support
Distance Traveled is a resource and support system for students to step-by-step think about a career in orthopedics, to open doors, and provide support along the way, including:
  • Shadowing and research opportunities
  • Communication to guide students who want to continue on a path to orthopedics
  • Resume workshops
  • Mentorship opportunities with residents and medical students
  • Tutors for pre-med students
  • Continued programming with support every step of the way
